About me

I have always had a great interest in the visual world, with much focus on nature and landscape. Growing up on the Alberta prairie, observing and appreciating that open, spacious landscape and the big active skies have become part of my artistic foundation. During my travels in Europe and Mexico I developed a great visual enjoyment for the architecture seen in those areas. When teaching art in elementary school, I observed children’s playful process in their art making. During my years as a studio potter, I developed a strong focus on shape in my designs.

The emphasis in my paintings is on shapes, with much attention to colour and texture. The relationship between shapes, and their relationship to the edge of the painting offer the viewer an opportunity to explore the entire painting. I am enchanted by structural arches and the surfaces seen on old buildings in Europe and Mexico. Arches often support the structure of my paintings. I am attracted to painterly rust stains, and layers of chipping paint, particularly seen on buildings in old Mexican neighbourhoods.

These rich layers of colours and texture greatly influence the surfaces of my paintings. I use the process of play, while I develop my work, intending to infuse the painting with excitement and energy as I follow my intuition in my work. I believe this process allows me to express all I bring to the canvas.

“Play has the effect of freeing the artist to follow their intuition.”
